DoD and one of its contractor have already suffered grave information losses regarding the technical system design and its usage. The information that was stolen this time was regarding the missile systems including the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System (THAAD), Patriot Missile System (PAC-3) and the Aegis ballistic-missile defense system (US Navy) and Navy's Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) among many others.
Though DSB refrained from commenting on when, where, how and whom of the data breach, the officials in the defense industry and some senior military officers reported that there were Chinese hackers behind it. US government in the previous year had openly blamed China for its cyber-attacks resulting in stealing away the sensitive information and the intellectual property belonging to the US businesses and the government.
DSB stated that cyber-attacks seem to have similar consequences to a nuclear or Cold war that sparked tension among the high . DoD is not fully equipped to address the situation of cyber threat and it needs some time to prepare itself and acquire deterrence skills, robust counter cyber-attack capabilities.
