The data theft was revealed when ECB received an anonymous mail asking for financial compensation against the data. The data was mostly coded except a few parts such as email addresses, street addresses and contact numbers. The database contains coded information about the downloads from the bank’s website.
The ECB was busy reaching out the attacked people and changing their passwords as a precautionary measure. The German police was on its toes for investigating the case ad its own experts of data security have been successful in addressing the vulnerability.
